News from NMAMIT | Hackfest '24

Hackfest '24, a 3-day National level Hackathon held from 5 th to 7th April 2024 at NMAM Institute of Technology, focused on the theme "Retrofuturism: Hack the Timestream”. The event was hosted by Finite Loop Club of NMAM Institute of Technology, Nitte and powered by EGDK India Pvt. Ltd., along with co-sponsorship from Niveus Solutions Pvt. Ltd. and The Global Point.

Over 225 participants from 27 colleges formed 60 teams, to tackle this 50-hour on-site event featuring an intense and exhilarating 36-hour coding marathon spanning 6 tracks: FinTech, Sustainable Development, Healthcare, Metaverse, Open Innovation and Logistics.

Faculty advisors Dr. Shashank Shetty and Mr. Puneeth RP, along with student organizers Mr. Swasthik Shetty, Mr. Nagaraj Pandith and Mr. Prathama SJ, led the event featuring tech talks, jam sessions, gaming events and a prize pool exceeding Rs. 2,00,000.

Hackfest '24 featured an array of enthralling events including an inauguration ceremony, insightful tech talks, jam sessions, gaming competitions, project demo presentations and a grand valedictory function, all supported by the CSI NMAMIT Chapter and Rachana Club.

Registrations for Hackfest '23 opened on February 19, 2024. A total of 2,038 logins were recorded resulting in the formation of 313 teams and submission of 212 ideas. 60 teams were shortlisted to participate in the event.



The Hackfest '24 inaugural ceremony was held on 5th April 2024 with an air of excitement with MCs Ms. Apeksha Nayak and Ms. Shaivi Salian setting the tone. Dr. Shashank Shetty escorted the dignitaries, including Chief Guests Mr. Desmond Rego, Team Manager from EGDK India Pvt. Ltd, Mr. Adarsh Prabhu, Associate Director, Niveus Solutions and Guest of Honor Dr. Gopal Mugeraya, Vice President (Technical) from Nitte University.


The prayer song by Ms. Shreya S Rao and the lamp lighting ceremony by the dignitaries marked the auspicious start. Dr. Gopal Mugeraya inaugurated Hackfest '24, the 3-day event dedicated to innovation, creativity and collaboration. Dr. Shashank Shetty extended a warm welcome to the gathering and acknowledged the support of the sponsors.

Mr. Desmond Rego, Mr. Adarsh Prabhu and Dr. Gopal Mugeraya inspired the participants with their insightful talks. Nitte Education Trust President & Chancellor of Nitte University, Shri. N Vinaya Hegde and Principal of NMAMIT Dr. Niranjan N Chiplunkar highlighted the institution's commitment to innovation. The esteemed panel of judges and mentors were introduced to the audience. Mr. Puneeth RP delivered the vote of thanks.










Tech Talk
Mr. Adarsh Prabhu, Associate Director, Niveus Solutions with his expertise in technology application modernization, provided the participants with valuable insights into the latest trends and advancements in the field. He discussed strategies for modernizing technology applications to enhance efficiency, scalability and performance. Participants benefited from Mr. Prabhu's expertise, gaining a deeper understanding of the importance of embracing modern technologies to stay competitive in today's fast-paced digital landscape.


 

Mr. Suraj N, Senior Data Scientist at EGDK India Pvt Ltd., delivered an engaging tech talk that shed light on the intricacies of data science. He shared his expertise on data analysis, machine learning and predictive modeling. The participants appreciated the opportunity to learn from his extensive experience and expertise in the field of data science.



The Social Media Committee organized a vibrant jam session led by Orville Anthony Sequeira & Team on 5th April 2024, creating a lively atmosphere filled with music and camaraderie. From 9:00 pm to 10:00 pm, participants enjoyed singing and playing musical instruments, fostering a sense of community and relaxation after a day of intense hacking. The jam session provided participants with an opportunity to unwind & recharge, contributing to a positive and enjoyable experience for all. Participants embraced the cool vibes of the night, showcasing their talents and bonding with fellow attendees through the power of music.

Overtime - Valorant Gaming Event

As part of Hackfest 2024, the organizing team comprising of Kshitiz Mangal, III CSE; Tejas D'Souza, II ISE and Nihal Mohan, III CSE hosted "Overtime," a thrilling Valorant gaming event on 6th April from 10:00 am to 8:30 pm. The event attracted a total of 10 teams, each consisting of 5 members, who competed fiercely for the coveted title. After an exhilarating day of intense gameplay, the following were declared as winners:

The event was a resounding success, thanks to the dedicated efforts of the organizers, volunteers and participants who made it all possible. "Overtime" provided participants with an exciting opportunity to showcase their gaming skills and compete at the highest level.


Selection and Presentation by Top 15 Teams

Out of the 60 teams that participated in the Hackathon, the following 15 teams were shortlisted for the demo presentation round. 



The valedictory ceremony of Hackfest was held on 7th April at 3 PM in Sambhram Hall, NMAMIT. To begin, a recap video highlighting the key moments of the Hackathon was presented. Mr. Puneeth R P extended a warm welcome to all attendees and Mr. Nagaraj Pandith delivered a comprehensive report detailing the highlights and achievements of the entire hackathon.

Chief Guests Mr. Praveen Udupa, Mr. Desmond Rego and Mr. Sujith Kumar addressed the crowd. Participant feedback was solicited during the ceremony to gather insights for future improvements. The names of the winning teams for each track was announced, followed by Dr. Shashank Shetty unveiling the names of the top three overall winning teams. News from KSHEMA | Awarded a patent

The Center for Advanced Neurological Research, KSHEMA was awarded a patent in April 2024, for the development of a sensitive cell based assay for detection of myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody (MOG IgG). This is the second patent awarded to the Center for its original research and contributions.



News from KSHEMA | Dr Niel Roberston's visit to Center for Advanced Neurological Research at K S Hegde Medical Academy

Dr Niel Roberston , Professor of Neurology and current President of Association of British Neurology, visited the Center for Advanced Neurological Research at K S Hegde Medical Academy. Mangalore during the period from 11th to 15th March 2024. He spent time observing the workings of the Mangalore Demyelinating Disease Registry and interacting with the faculty who presented the ongoing work at the Center.

Additionally he delivered a talk to the faculty and students on 14th March 2024 and visited the Departments of Radiology and Public Health at KSHEMA.

News from KSHEMA | CME on “ Exploring Embryology – Beyond boundaries”

A CME on “Exploring Embryology – Beyond boundaries” was conducted on 28th March 2024 at the New Lecture Hall 1, KSHEMA, by the Department of Anatomy in association with the KSHEMA Alumni Association.

The resource persons were Prof. (Dr.) Ashwin K, Dept. of Anatomy, KSHEMA; Prof.(Dr,) Prasanna Kumar Shetty K, Dept. of OBG, KSHEMA; Dr Dhannya Binoy (Alumna, 2000 batch), Chief Embryologist, Fertility lab, Mitera Hospital, Kottayam, Kerala and Dr. Lakshmy S Nair (Alumna 2010 batch), Consultant, Reproductive Medicine, Mitera Hospital, Kottayam, Kerala.

Prof. (Dr.) Pretty Ratnakar, HoD, Anatomy, welcomed the gathering and introduced the speakers. The vote of thanks was proposed by Prof.(Dr.) Swathi. Around 275 delegates that comprised students, faculty members from KSHEMA and other institutions attended the CME. An undergraduate embryology model competition was also organized. 15 groups participated in the competition and the winners received gift vouchers.








News from KSHEMA | “Blossom with Balance Navigating ‘PCOD’ in Youthful Years”

The Department of Physiology in association with the KSHEMA Alumni Association organised a guest lecture on “Blossom with balance - Navigating PCOD in youthful years” on 8th March 2024 at the New Lecture Hall 1, KSHEMA, by Dr. Indira Shanbhag, (Alumna1999 batch) Consultant Obstetrician & Gynecologist, City Hospital, Udupi and President, Women’s Wing, IMA Udupi.

Prof.(Dr.) Shailaja Moodithaya welcomed the gathering and introduced the speaker.Dr. Shanbhag provided an awareness of symptoms of PCOD and emphasized the importance of maintaining healthy lifestyle in management of PCOD. Following the talk, the audience participated in an interactive session.

Prof. (Dr.) Ashwin.K, Coordinator KSHEMA Alumni Association delivered the vote of thanks. Around 275 members attended the session.

Dr. Nitte Shankar Adyanthaya Memorial PU College organised a farewell ceremony on 13th January 2024 at the college grounds for the outgoing pre-university batch.. Addressing the students, Dr. Naveen Shetty K, Principal emphasized the pivotal role played by students in shaping society, highlighting that education is not just about acquiring grades but also about developing a refined personality and character. He said, "Humility adds more weight to knowledge." The juniors arranged various entertainment programs along with games.

News from ABSMIDS | A heartening tale of bravery and selflessness

In a heartening tale of bravery and selflessness, Akshaya A, a second-year BDS student of A B Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences, Mangalore hailing from Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, has emerged as a beacon of hope, captivating the admiration of both locals and her institution alike.

Akshaya's valiant deed, reminiscent of the 'Mannummal Boys' incident, evokes a sense of reverence for her courage, a decade later. It was on a fateful day, that Akshaya found herself in a struggle against the waters, only to emerge as a savior, rescuing a 11 year old girl from drowning in a river. Thiruvananthapuram locals stand in awe of Akshaya's past heroic act, where she fearlessly rescued a young boy from the same stream during her 10th class, braving heavy rain and uncertainty.

The Nitte family beams with pride as Akshaya receives the esteemed 'Jeevan Raksha Award' from the Kerala State Government, recognizing her recent act of rescuing an 11-year-old girl from drowning in a river. As Akshaya stands adorned with accolades, her journey embodies the essence of bravery, compassion, and selflessness, igniting a sense of unity and admiration within her community and beyond.
