Two days National Conference ‘KSHEMA STEMCON-2017’

The 2nd Biennial National Conference on “Advances in Stem Cell Research and Cell Based Therapy with Emphasis on Orthopedic, Dermatological and Dental Applications”was held at K. S. Hegde Medical Academy (KSHEMA) from 22nd to 23rdDecember, 2017. This conference was jointly organized by Nitte University Centre for Stem Cell Research & Regenerative Medicine (NUCSReM) and Department of Orthopaedics, KSHEMA. INAUGURAL PROGRAMME KSHEMA STEMCON-2017 was inaugurated on 22nd December 2017 by Sri. N. Vinaya Hegde, Hon’ble Chancellor of Nitte (Deemed to be University). During his inaugural address, Mr. Hegde emphasized the growing importance of stem cell research in medical education and opined that the support from the government is very essential to take forward the potential applications of cell therapies. He later released the KSHEMA STEMCON-2017abstracts and proceedings book. Prof. (Dr.) B. Satheesh Kumar Bhandary, Vice-Chancellor of Nitte (Deemed to be University) presided over the function. The resource persons from abroad Prof. (Dr.) A. Ananthram Shetty, Chair of Orthopaedics and Director of Research, Institute of Medical Sciences, Faculty of Health and Wellbeing, Canterbury Christchurch University, Kent, UK, and Prof. (Dr.) Seok Jung Kim, Director of Cell Therapy Centre and an Orthopaedic Surgeon at The Catholic University of Korea, Seoul, Republic of Korea, both are serving as Adjunct Faculty at NUCSReM since 2013, Dr. Suk-Hyun Cho, Senior Member of Healthcare, Review and Assessment Committee, Seoul, South Korea, and Prof. (Dr.) M. Shantharam Shetty, Pro-Chancellor of Nitte (Deemed to be University) were the Guests of Honour. Dr. YogeeshKamat was the Observer from Karnataka Medical Council. Prof. (Dr.) P. S. Prakash, Dean, KSHEMA delivered welcome address and Prof. (Dr.) K. Jayaprakash Shetty, Vice-Dean, KSHEMA spoke about the conference. Dr. Lawrence Mathias, Head, Dept. of Orthopaedics proposed the vote of thanks. Dr. Ankeeta, KSHEMA compered the programme.

Fourteen (14) faculty speakers delivered the talks on recent advances of stem cells in biomedicine with emphasis on orthopaedic, haematology, dermatology and dentistry applications, and also on the funding requirements in stem cell area to provide better health care services.

Throughout the conference encompassing 7 scientific sessions, a total of 16 faculty talks, 8 delegates’ oral presentations and 35 poster presentations were made sharing their work, knowledge and experience with the 190 delegates. Apart from the presentations, the conference also organized the demonstration of live surgeries of orthopaedic cases being performed by a team of renowned orthopaedic surgeons.

The best oral and poster presentations with a cash award of Rs. 5000/- each were presented to the delegates Dr. Divyashree, PG Student, Dept. of Surgery, KSHEMA and Mr. SakethKapoor, PhD Scholar, Yenepoya Research Centre, respectively. Certificates of merit for oral and poster presentation were given to Dr. RachaitaChhabra, PG Student, ABSMIDSand Dr. Varsha V. Salian, Reader, ABSMIDS.
