FAO-Nitte workshop held at Hotel Gateway Taj (10 April, 2017) - NUCSER

The FAO-Nitte University International workshop on “Strengthening capacities, policies and national action plans on prudent and responsible use of antimicrobials in fisheries” was inaugurated at Hotel Gateway Taj, Mangalore on 10th April, 2017. Dr. J.K. Jena, Deputy Director General, Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi was the Chief Guest, Dr. Melba Reantaso, Sr. Officer, Food & Agricultural Organisation, Rome was the Guest of Honour and Prof. Dr. S. Ramananda Shetty, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Nitte University, presided over the function.

Dr. Iddya Karunasagar, Senior Director (International Affairs), Nitte University, welcomed the gathering and mentioned that it is a matter of pride to have a chief guest like Dr. Jena, who is the first Indian to Chair the Asian Fisheries Society. FAO has chosen Nitte University to host this first international workshop in aquatic animal health area, mainly because of the expertise available in Nitte University and past experience of organising successful International Workshops. The workshop has official delegates from China, Vietnam, Malaysia and Philippines. There are expert speakers from FAO, World Animal Health Organisation (OIE), Ireland, Netherland, Philippines, Vietnam and India. Dr. Melba Reantaso from FAO headquarters in Rome is leading the project on aquaculture. Dr. Iddya Karunasagar and Dr. Indrani Karunasagar from Nitte University are serving both as local organisers as well as Expert speakers in the Workshop.

The Chief Guest Dr. Jena explained that India has recognised importance of antimicrobial resistance and has already initiated a programme to study the problem in aquaculture systems in India involving the eight Indian Council of Agrcultural Research institutes. He noted that India has a well established aquatic animal disease surveillance programme and the information coming out of this programme will help to develop good management practices to minimise the use of antimicrobials in aquaculture.

Prof. Dr. S. Ramananda Shetty in his presidential address said that it has been a constant endeavour of Nitte University to create Centers of Excellence in health care related areas with a focus on improving delivery of services to rural areas. Antimicrobial resistance is a scourge that has been effecting healthcare sector globally and that he was happy to note that the Food and Agriculture Organisation has taken the lead to help Member countries address this important issue in a coordinated manner, by developing national action plans. He was thankful to FAO for choosing Nitte University to host this first international workshop in aquatic animal health area.
