Workshop on impact of climate change on marine microbial flora - NUCSER

A one-day INDO-SWEDISH workshop on “Assessment of Human Vulnerability to Harmful Microbial Bloom” was conducted by NUCSER on 16thMarch, 2016 at the Webinar Centre of the Institute to study the effects of climate change on living forms. This is a collaborative project between India and Sweden. Dr. Indrani Karunasagar, is the Principal Investigator from Nitte University, India and Prof. Anna Godhe and Dr. Per Knutsson from the University of Gothenburg are the Swedish counterparts. Dr. Per Knuttson, University of Gothenburg, spoke on the scenarios for climate change induced harmful microbial blooms along the Indian coast. Prof Ramchandra Bhatta, emeritus scientist, ICAR, College of Fisheries, Mangalore highlighted the scenario in Mangalore. Dr. Lucy Turner from the University of Gothenburg spoke on the biophysical response of mussels to climate change. Dr. Rashmi Narayana from T A Management Institute, Manipal spoke on a socioeconomic perception on the health risks of marine fish consumption. Ms. H S Sadhana from the College of Fisheries talked about the temporal changes in fish consumption. The workshop concluded with a presentation on the need for integrated framework for risk assessment of marine products and the importance of climatic and social science data in predicting the vulnerability of humans to harmful microbial blooms. Dr. Anirban Chakraborty, Associate Professor and coordinator of the Centre presented concluding remarks and proposed the vote of thanks.
