The Department of Psychiatry organized a Conference, "Third Nitte International Conference and Workshop." from 27-11-2015 to 29-11-2015 at Nitte Rural Medical and Psychiatric Centre ( Vakil Perody Medical and Psychiatry Centre).
Conference Report : A three days international conference and workshop was organised at Nitte on 27th , 28th and 29th November-2015 by Nitte Rural Psychiatry Centre and the Department of Psychiatry, KSHEMA .The theme of the conference was Beyond Symptoms Control-Enhancing performance in Functioning .It was sponsored by Asian Federation of Psychiatric Association, Nitte University and Institute of Australian Psychiatrists.
The conference was inaugurated by Prof. Dr. Ramananda Shetty, Vice Chancellor, Nitte University and Shri Vinaya Hegde , Chancellor , Nitte University presided over the function. There were totally 14 speakers, 9 from overseas and 5 from India. Dr.Parameswara Deva (Malaysia) , Dr. Nagesh Pai(Australia), Dr. Andrew Mohanraj ( Srilanka), Dr.Cary Breakey ( Australia), Dr. Anne Moonan ( Australia), Dr. Aye Chan Maung Maung( Myanmar) Dr. Kyi Min Tun (Myanmar), Mr. Lyioyd Brennan , (Australia), , Dr. Naveen Chandra ( Australia) and Dr. Rishikesh Brehere, Dr. Mahesh Gowda, Dr. Biju Rajan , Dr.Santosh Prabhu, Dr. P.V. Bhandary, Dr. Sripathy Bhat were the Indian Speakers.
Prof. Dr. Ramananda Shetty, Vice Chancellor, Nitte University said that Psychiatrists across the globe could come together and chalk out the plan to improve the quality of life of the people who are suffering from mental illness. Mental stability and well-being can even contribute for longevity, he added. Presiding over the inaugural session, Shri. N Vinaya Hegde, President of Nitte Education Trust and Vice Chancellor of Nitte University said that mental patients need a lot of counselling and care. While treating the people suffering from mental illness, we need to be very affective and effective, he added. Dr. Naveen Chandra, Director N.R.P.S. and well known Consultant Psychiatrist from Melbourne, Australia and also the Organizing President of the Third Nitte International Conference welcomed the gathering and presented a brief overview of the various sub-themes of the Three day Conference.
Dr. Anne Noonan, President of Institute of Australian Psychiatrists, Dr. Nagesh Pai, Foundation Professor of Psychiatry, Graduate School of Medicine, University of Wollongong, Australia, Prof. Dr. Parameshvar Deva, Malaysia, Professor Yogeesh Hegde, Registrar, Nitte Education Trust were present on the occasion. Dr. Sathish Rao, Professor and HOD of Psychiatry, KSHEMA, Nitte University proposed vote of thanks. On the same occasion, the Founder Chairman of the World Federation of Asian Psychiatrists Prof. Dr. Parameshvar Deva felicitated Shri N Vinaya Hegde, Chancellor, Nitte University with a citation for the support Shri Hegde extended towards Psychiatry and Rural Psychiatry in particular.
Dr. Naveen Chandra and Smt. Sharitha Chandra were also felicitated with a citation for their service to Rural Psychiatry. Psychiatrists, Rehabilitation experts, Psychosocial experts from Malaysia, Australia, SriLanka and other countries presented their scholarly views on the theme and shared their experiences with the delegates of the Conference. Dr. Sudhir Raj K, Professor, JKSHIM, Nitte compered the program.
