Visit to Japan by the faculty and students of NUCSER

A team of eleven members from NUCSER including four faculty members and seven students from the Department of Biomedical Science visited the University of Miyazaki, Japan for a period of two weeks between Oct 3 and Oct 20, 2015 to undergo an extensive training in cutting edge techniques such as electron microscopy, FACS, Neuron cell culture, MALDI-TOFF, and bio-implants. The team was led by Dr. Anirban Chakraborty, Coordinator, NUCSER. This program was entirely funded by Japan Science and Technology (JST) Agency under the framework of Japan-Asia Youth Exchange Program in Science (SAKURA SCIENCE PROGRAM).

SAKURA Exchange Program in Science is aimed at enhancing exchanges of the youths between Asian countries and Japan. Under this program, JST facilitates short-term visits of competent Asian youths to Japan, who will play a crucial role in the field of science and technology of their country through close collaboration of industry-academia-government. The selected Asian youths get a chance to learn about the leading Japanese technologies at Japanese universities, research institutions and private companies.

The Nitte team also participated in an International Conference on Arsenic pollution during the visit. In addition to learning science, the participants also got a glimpse of Japanese culture and tradition through various activities included in the program such as Kimono Wearing Ceremony, Farm Stay with Agriculturists etc. Nitte University bagged this prestigious SAKURA Exchange Program through a joint project proposal submitted by Dr. Harish Kumar Madhyastha from the University of Miyazaki, Miyazaki, Japan and Dr. Anirban Chakraborty from NUCSER. Nitte was chosen from a total of twenty-one applicants and was the only University selected from India. The performance of the Nitte team was rated as A++ by the host University of Japan.

This recognition to Nitte University is the culmination of a series of discussions that started between the University of Miyazaki Coordinator and the primary awardee, Dr. Harish Kumar Madhyastha, and the Director of R&D, Nitte University, Dr. Indrani Karunasagar during the former’s visit to Mangaluru in January this year and a subsequent visit of the Indian coordinator, Dr. Anirban Chakraborty, to University of Miyazaki, Japan during April this year.
