Nitte university hosts the 4th annual symposium of the society of biological chemists (i) coastal Karanataka chapter - NUCSER

The fourth Annual Symposium of the Coastal Karnataka Chapter of the Society of Biological Chemists (India) was held at the Centre for Science Education and Research, Nitte University, Paneer Campus, Deralakatte on 14th November 2015. This was the first time that Nitte University hosted this prestigious annual event in her campus.



Inaugurating the symposium, Prof. (Dr.) S. Ramananda Shetty, Vice-Chancellor, Nitte University, spoke of the need for integrating higher education in the country with research. He reiterated the need for inculcating scientific research temper amongst the students and also for the government and other funding agencies to allocate more funds for research. He said that events such as this annual symposium are a great way to bring together students and researchers on a common platform.

Prof. (Dr.) D. N. Rao, Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, gave an overview of the history and the activities of the first scientific society of the country, started even before the Indian Independence. He mentioned that the society has been providing funds for students in the form of travel grants and research grants and that research students should make use of these opportunities.



Prof. (Dr.) K. Satyamoorthy, Director, School of Life Sciences, Manipal University, Manipal gave an overview of the activities of the Coastal Karnataka Chapter of the Society. Earlier, Prof. (Dr.) Indrani Karunasagar, Director (R&D), Nitte University and Dean, Faculty of Biological Sciences, NUCSER, welcomed the participants from the Coastal Karnataka region. Dr. Anirban Chakraborty Co-ordinator, NUCSER, delivered the vote of thanks on behalf of the Organisers, Nitte University.

The highlights of the Symposium were more than 15 talks delivered by Eminent Scientists from premiere Institutes in Bangalore, Chennai, Mumbai, Kerala and Mysore. Young researchers and postgraduate students presented posters on various topics ranging from basic to applied research on various categories in Life Sciences. The theme of the symposium was “One Health: An Interdisciplinary approach towards betterment of human, animal and environmental health”.
