Department of pedodontics and preventive dentistry (constituent college of nitte university) - ABSMIDS

Kodinhi is a village in rural Kerala, where if you have seen one child you will probably run into its double soon after. In this community of 2,000 families there are 250 sets of twins. In 2008 alone, of the 300 families who had children, 15 pairs were born, a rate at least six times higher than the average for the country. India has one of the lowest twinning rates in the world, but Kodinhi is close to the top of the global twinning league. Hence the Department of Pedodontics and Preventive dentistry, conducted a dental screening camp as a part of the N-BRITE program among twins residing in Kodinhi village, Malappuram district, Kerala. Dated on 17.7.2015-20.7.2015, under the able guidance of Sr. Prof. (Dr.) Amitha M. Hegde, H.O.D. of the Department of Pedodontics and Preventive Dentistry. A total of 150 patients were screened. There were 58 pairs of twins including 1 triplet .

The children were screened to evaluate their caries experience, taste preference and oral hygiene status. A questionnaire survey was conducted on healthy eating practices among twins, following which health education on the importance of oral hygiene measures, importance of good nutrition and avoidance of junk foods was given to the children. A total 110 children were referred to A.B. Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences. Post-graduates attended were Dr. Minu Mathew, Dr. Hari Krishnan .S and Dr Devika. J .Nair.
