Seminar was organized by Dept. of Pharmacology, NGSMIPS

A series of lectures by the faculty of MCOPS, Manipal University was organized on 21st February 2015 on various topics in the area of pharmaceutical care, pharmaeconomics, research and ethical issues in clinical trials. The details of the topics as follows

Lecture 1: Opportunities of pharmaceutical care Speaker: Dr. Anantha Naik Nagappa, Professor, MCOPS, Manipal University, Manipal - 576104, India

Abstract The pharmacy in India has grown only on industrial front and has remained stagnant in the area of pharmacy practice. The pharmacy practice is a major professional opportunity in developed countries. The pharmaceutical care is the need of the hour due to emergence of life style diseases like diabetes, hypertension, COPD, obesity and Asthma. The patient engagement and education are the critical factors which can play a major role in reducing the burden of morbidity and mortality of the diseases. WHO-FIP has brought out Pharmaceutical Care in 2006 the talk will be based on the experiences of Pharmaceutical care by the author.

Lecture 2: Emerging comparative effectiveness research: need of the day Speaker: Dr. Uday Venkat Mateti, Research Scholar, MCOPS, Manipal University, Manipal - 576104, India

Abstract Comparative effectiveness research is the methodical research comparing the cost and consequences of diverse treatment interventions and strategies to prevent, diagnose, treat and monitor health conditions. The rationale of comparative effectiveness research is to help doctors, healthcare professionals, patients, and policy makers to make informed decisions that will improve health care at both the individual and population levels. In this talk, author would like to address the important components of comparative effectiveness research such as Incremental cost-Effectiveness Ratio (ICER) and Quality-Adjusted Life Year (QALY)

Lecture 3: Introduction to pharmacoeconomics Speaker: Mr. Asim Priyendu, Dept. of Pharmacy Management, MCOPS, Manipal University, Manipal - 576104, India

Abstract The increased burden of medical expenditure has necessitated to find out the alternate options and their evaluation in terms of Pharmacoeconomic approaches. The pharmacoeconomic approaches are the most pragmatic methods with clarity on the cryptic therapeutic conditions in a scientific and evidence based manner which makes one to take a rational decision among the choice of treatments. Pharmacoeconomic methods such as Cost-effectiveness analysis, cost-minimization analysis, cost- benefit analysis etc. compare the cost of the therapy or a particular drug with the outcome of the therapy. Cost of illness studies help to find out the total economic burden of a particular disease or health condition on the society. The impact of a disease and its treatment on a patient is reflected by the quality of life the patient is having before and after the treatment.

Lecture 4: Ethical issues in Biomedical Research Speaker: Mr. Kanav Khera, Assistant Professor, Department of Pharmacy Practice, MCOPS, Manipal University, Manipal - 576104, India

Abstract The Ethical issues related to human clinic trails with reference to some case studies and the relevance of Ethics especially in clinical trials is formulated. The conditions in which clinical trials were conducted in the past, by not taking human consent which led many deaths and disabilities in human volunteers.
