College day celebrations of NGSMIPS The College day celebrations of Nitte Gulabi Shetty Memorial Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences was held on March 12, 2015 at the KSHEMA auditorium amidst lot of fanfare and excitement. The day began with a prayer invoking blessings from the almighty. Dr. Narayana Charyulu - Vice Principal delivered the welcome address and introduced the Chief guest Dr. Raghuram Bhandary. Drug Controller, Govt of Karnataka.

Dr.Satish Bhandary the Dean of K.S.Hegde Medical Academy, Dr. Rajshekar Director curriculum development Nitte University, Mr. K. V. Nagaraj, Mr. Shankar Nayak Asst. Drug controllers, Mrs. Ashalatha Drug Inspector were among the other prominent dignitaries invited. Presenting the College Annual Report, the Principal Dr. C.S. Shastry gave a comprehensive picture of the academic achievements, ongoing funded projects, research impetus and the concerted effort of the college towards Institute-Industry collaboration for placement and internship of students with pharmaceutical companies in Goa, Bangalore and Mysore.

Addressing the students, the chief guest Dr. Bhandary said that the pharma sector is in its bloom phase and a lot of job openings are available in the Govt. sector as well in the private sector such as Contract Research Organizations. He also said that globally India is positioned at number 3 in terms of production and 12th in terms of turnover and that the sector was growing at a phenomenal pace recording 12-15 % growth annually. He said this was possible due to the ‘Low cost high value advantage’ courtesy the price capping by National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority – NPPA. Citing a few examples, Dr. Bhandary said that every third tablet or drug consumed across the globe is manufactured in India. 30 percent of the Generic medicines sold in US and UK is manufactured in India.






Bangalore is attracting huge investment in the Pharma sector by pharma giants like GSK who is setting up a state of the art facility investing close to 1000 crores and many other multinational companies engaged in manufacturing life saving drugs, cardiac stents, mechanical contraceptives, vaccines, capsules, medical devices etc were choosing to invest in India. He said that the life expectancy has risen from 46 to 60 years which is no less achievement. He also warned that amidst this promising growth there was a very disheartening and dangerous development of indiscriminate use of drugs which were being dispensed without any prescription. He said that it was the duty of the pharma fraternity and the physicians to combat this growing menace endangering the lives of mankind and uphold the spirit of the oath taken by them at the time of joining the profession. Dr. Satish Bhandary, Dean KSHEMA congratulated the students for their splendid performance both curricular and extracurricular.

His appreciation of the Pharmacy College as the big brother among the 5 constituent colleges sent a resounding applause in the auditorium. He said that the 5 constituent colleges were like the five fingers of the hand and that each was as important as the other. Prizes were distributed to students recognizing their achievements in academic, sports and cultural and artistic fields. This was followed by a refreshments break and a spectacular entertainment program thereafter. Dr. Shantanu saha, Asst. Prof Dept. of Pharmacognosy and coordinator Cultural Activities Committee managed the proceedings. Mr. Jestin Joseph president of the students council shared his experience and the General Secretary Mr. antony deliverd the vote of thanks.
