MoU Exchange between Universite de Toulouse-Paul Sabatier, France and Nitte University

An exchange of Memorandum of Understanding between the Universite de Toulouse-Paul Sabatier and Nitte University, Mangalore, India was held at the K S Hedge Charitable Hospital, Deralakatte, Mangalore on 15th December, 2014.

The welcome address was proposed by Prof.Indrani Karunasagar, Director ( R & D), Nitte University. She was instrumental in planning the research co-operation between Nitte University and Universite de Toulouse-Paul Sabatier having visited the University of Toulouse in January, 2014 and seeing opportunities for collaboration. She invited Prof. Pierre Emmanuel Gleizes, Director, Toulouse University, to visit Nitte University for discussions and to create a formal platform for collaboration. An untiring researcher herself she sees promise in this co-operation beginning with projects to be submitted jointly. It is the unstinting support of the Chancellor Mr. Vinaya Hegde, that has enabled a dream of Dr. Indrani Karunasagar and Prof. Pierre Emmnuel Gleizes to become a reality.




The MoU between Nitte University and the Universite de Toulouse-Paul Sabatier is designed to promote scientific and training co-operation between the two Universities. Besides other areas of joint programmes being envisaged, the primary objective is to develop a scientific co-operation in the field of biomedical research.

The programme was graced by the presence of His Excellency, the Consul General of French Consulate in India, Mr. Eric Lavertu, the Science Attache at the French Consulate, Dr. Jenifer Clark, the Chancellor of Nitte Univesity, Shri. N.V.Hegde, the Pro-Chancellors, Prof. Shantharam Shetty and Mr. Vishal Hegde.
The Pro-Chancellor, Prof Shantharam Shetty representing Nitte University and Prof. Pierre Emmanuel Gleizes, Director, Universite de Toulouse-Paul Sabatier exchanged the documents in the presence of the dignitaries.

His Excellency, Mr. Eric Lavertu remarked that it was indeed a matter of pride in sharing of scientific heritage between France and India. This particular event was more special as it is a new venture into scientific association with a new University that has carved a niche for herself in various branches such as Engineering, Medical, Dental, Allied Health Sciences and more recently Stem cell, Genetics and Basic Biomedical Research. Mr. Lavertu stressed on student and staff exchange between French University and Nitte. He also emphasized on science developments focussing on improving the life of the rural communities, just the way Mahatma Gandhi envisaged. He was appreciative of the endeavours of Mr. Vinaya Hegde, the Chancellor towards his efforts to provide medical facilities and education reaching the villages and under privileged people of the district. He lauded the initiative of the Chancellor for setting up several rural primary health centres and dental clinics for the benefit of the rural poor, for whom otherwise high and expensive care is unaffordable. Dr. Jenifer Clark enlightened the staff and students on opportunities that could be availed and with the MoU Exchange, there would be greater interaction possible. She enlightened the audience on the Indo-French Science and Technology co-operation in areas of mutual interest and spoke of her own role in helping to bring together potential partners and nurturing projects. She spoke of funding availability for Ph.D through sandwich programmes apart from full time research in French Universities and also on post doctoral fellowships. The fostering of young researchers through collaborations between Nitte University and the Univesite de Toulouse, Paul Sabatier was possible through Indo-French projects, workshops, seminars, visiting professorships and the R&D Clubs. As the Science Manager and an excellent researcher herself, a Ph.D from Cambridge University, she now looks to bringing about deeper ties in Indo-French research partnerships and has discussed indepth the modalities with Prof. Indrani Karunasagar, Director (R&D) Nitte University.
The Chancellor, Shri N V Hegde in his concluding remarks lauded the science developments in France and urged them to hold hands of their younger sibling in Nitte University. He was also overwhelmed by the compliments from the Director and Professor Pierre Emmanuel Gleizes about the high scientific standards he saw in the young researchers of the new research institute. He hoped Nitte University would one day be globally recognized for their research in Biological Sciences, Engineering, Humanities and health care.

The programme ended with the vote of thank by Dr. Anirban Chakraborty, former senior post doc from Universite de Toulouse, France, who personally commended the Director, Prof. Indrani Karunasagar for introducing Nitte to France and forging the partnership.
