One-day workshop on Basic Photography - NICO

Nitte Institute of Communication held a one-day workshop on Basic Photography by well-known photographer, Astro Mohan at Nitte University campus on Friday. Mr Mohan began the workshop with a brief history of photography. ”Indians may have had at least a good idea of photography in 15th century much before the British discovered it” said Astro Mohan , citing works at Virupaksha Temple at Vijayanagara, Hampi. The workshop was interactive with students full of questions. With over 19 years of experience, Astro Mohan, also introduced the students to the evolution of photography and the camera using slide shows. Details and photographs from earliest cameras like pinhole camera, Daguerrotype, medium format, 35mm cameras kept the students active throughout the session. Students were even given small exercises to help understand the similarity between lens and human eyes. “Nature teaches a lot” said Mohan when he was explaining the purpose of a photograph. ”Visual media is a powerful communication tool which can be approached by anyone” he added. The workshop also emphasized on modern cameras and techniques. Also ,its advantages and disadvantages. At the same time he mentioned the film roll based cameras and dark room processing. As he said,” The main aim of the workshop is to make students realize that photography is not just about ‘holding your mobile cameras, taking selfies and sharing it instantly..it should be done in all its essence.” Khusboo Mishra, President of Student Council welcomed the guest and the gathering , followed by Ashika Appiah, Vice president. Prof Rakesh Katarey, HoD of Mass Communication and Journalism department, the faculty members Appa Rao, Ramesh D.K, Kiran Thingalaya ,Deekshita were also present.
